Author Steven Colborne's spiritual journey began following the breakdown of his parent's marriage and his mother's gruelling battle with cancer. These events led him into the world of spirituality, and he became fascinated by the idea of spiritual enlightenment and how this might be attained.

The Philosophy of a Mad Man is a book written by Colborne to convey the lessons he learned on his quest for enlightenment and is divided into two parts. Part 1 details the author's journey into the world of spirituality and includes accounts of a shaking meditation retreat with Indian guru Ratu Bagus and a visit to the home of spiritual guru Mooji, among other spiritual adventures. Part 2 presents the philosophy which Colborne came to believe as a result of his spiritual journey.

Enlightenment is a subject that has caused much confusion in spiritual circles, and The Philosophy of a Mad Man is a book that will be comforting and inspiring to readers who are also on a search to make sense of this spiritual idea and how human beings can find lasting peace and happiness.

The title of the book was chosen by Colborne because his spiritual search drove him into an experience of madness, and he recalls in the book how he endured several spells in psychiatric hospital due to experiences that were described by doctors as 'episodes of psychosis'. He also describes how these experiences caused him to awaken to the reality of the existence of a personal God, and this awakening—which could perhaps be described as true enlightenment—marked a wonderful close to what had been a distressing chapter in his life story.
